(Note : power trio whose sole 1983 album is an enduring document of the Southern
California underground. Based in crime-ridden '80s Los Angeles against the
backdrop of juvenile hardcore and vapid hard rock, 100 Flowers crafted a sound
that rests between the inspired bursts of The Minutemen and the pastoral jangle
of the Dream Syndicate with similarities to the equally oblique Monitor and The
Gun Club (who even included a Urinals cover in their set))

B3 Asiá 4:00
(Note : n 1980, shortly after Suicide's second full-length, Martin Rev released his
first solo album on preeminent No Wave label Infidelity (Lust/Unlust).
Uninhibited by the trappings of a collaborator, Rev was freed to explore his
most experimental and pop leanings with dirty synths, dark melodies and
dreamlike textures, and produced a masterpiece of modern alienation that
captures a uniquely New York landscape. Echoing other electronic forerunners
such as Silver Apples and Kraftwerk, and foreshadowing the work of Aphex Twin
and Air, Rev's solo outing rests firmly in the lineage of unnerving sounds from
the furthest fringe of maladjustment)

attributed to her alone. Here the actress-cum-singer has finally arrived)

" CRIME's loose, damaged rock n' roll was as immediate as it was controversial.
They were Punk by any definition, yet shunned the label with a guttersnipe
sneer. Their meticulously cultivated aesthetic of S&M graphics and police
uniforms produced some of the era's most indelible imagery. One of their finest
moves was playing in the San Quentin prison yard.Formed by guitarists/vocalists
Johnny Strike + Frankie Fix,CRIME enlisted bassist Ron The Ripper and drummers
Ricky "Tractor" Williams (later of The Sleepers), Brittley Black, and Hank Rank.
Joey D'Kaye later joined on keyboards and bass duties)

In the mid-1970s Parisian composer and multi-instrumentalist Thierry Müller began
operating primarily under the Ilitch moniker. Juxtaposing dark, electronic soundscapes
and solo guitar improvisations, Ilitch created some of the most enduring music of the
era. It comes as no surprise that Nurse With Wound included Müller on their famed list
of influential avant-garde artists.
Originally released on Oxygene Records in 1978, Ilitch's debut Periodikmindtrouble was
a shot across the bow for the French underground scene. Comprised of instrumental four
-track recordings made in Müller's dorm room, the album features gritty tape loops,
analog synth swells and angst-ridden guitars. "Sequence 4" fills the stereo field with
eerie harmonium and kosmische textures, while the side-long title track is a bona fide
organ soliloquy, exploring both abrasive and ambient sonorities. "Derriere La Fenetre
(Behind The Window)" dives deeper into acoustic patterns to reveal the expressive
quality of Müller's singular style. Periodikmindtrouble lays the groundwork for an
impressive body of work that has grown only more unsettling over the past three
decades."

In 1980 Ilitch mastermind Thierry Müller released his second LP, 10 Suicides, on the
French imprint S.C.O.P.A. Unlike his debut Periodikmindtrouble (also available from
Superior Viaduct), which featured intricately layered instrumentals, 10 Suicides
explores a more art-damaged pop sensibility. While distorted guitars and atmospheric
synth workouts remain a part of Müller's signature sound, several songs credit the
mysterious Ruth Ellyeri, who was not an actual person, but rather Müller's female alter
-ego.

In the late '70s, The Avengers established themselves as one of the US's preeminent
punk bands. Fusing incisive guitar hooks, explosive rhythms and adolescent venom, the
group forged some of the most in-your-face songs of the era. Their live shows were
legendary, playing up and down the West Coast and even blowing Sex Pistols off the
stage at the latter's final performance. As Byron Coley writes in the liner notes, 'Of
the best bands of San Francisco's first wave in 1977, The Avengers were by far the
coolest and youngest sounding. They roared without irony, as though this were indeed
Year Zero (and, for a moment, it was), with history being overwritten by the new. The
honesty of their belief was carried by their sound. And it was convincing!' Originally
released in 1983, four years after the band's dissolution, The Avengers' self-titled LP
is often referred to as 'The Pink Album' for its magenta-hued cover design. The Pink
Album remains The Avengers' definitive statement--collecting their classic Dangerhouse
EP, sessions recorded with the Pistols' Steve Jones and a half-dozen revelatory demos.
While much has been written about The Avengers in the past three decades, rock critic
Greil Marcus puts it succinctly, 'The word I always come back to is mystical, and that
remains almost theirs alone.'"

West Coast punk. Their debut 45 appeared on What Records?, the same label that released
The Germs' Forming single. While 'I Hate The Rich' combines catchy melodies with a

"Flipper formed in San Francisco in 1979 on the cusp of Ronald Reagan's presidency. It
seems fitting that their debut single (originally released on Subterranean in 1981)
turns environmental disaster into the band's modus operandi. Chorus-less and catchy-
as-hell, 'Love Canal' features all that would become Flipper trademarks in four
art-damaged minutes: knuckle-dragging tempo, ear-splitting feedback, basslines to crash
your car to and a depraved frontman wailing about uncomfortable American matters.
'Ha Ha Ha' is even more direct in its intent, mocking suburbia with a flat, almost
psychotic laugh. This reissue comes with original sleeve design. Limited edition red

Hitherto a real rarity, this release compiles material recorded by Coleman in 1959 and
1960 that only ever surfaced as a Japanese release in 1975. The CD is comprised of two
different sets, the first performed with Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass
and Billy Higgins on drums, the second with a different drummer, Ed Blackwell. Opening
with the supremely lyrical swing of ‘Music Always’, Coleman’s playful alto sax figures
are beautifully complemented by Cherry’s elaborate soloing, which is the focus of the
second half of the piece. Coleman ups the tempo for ‘Brings Goodness’ and ‘To Us’,
which are populated by fluttering, bluesy phrases. ‘Some Other’ takes the form of a
more ballad-like contemplative modal exploration, before ‘Motive For Its Use’ brings
the disc to a close in a particularly upbeat, swinging fashion. Utterly essential
material for Coleman completists, this release documents all but lost early emissions
from the classic quartet line-ups.

Harry Pussy emerged out of the Florida swamps in 1993. Formed by Adris Hoyos and Bill
Orcutt, the duo became legendary for their volatile live shows, which often devolved
into violent clashes with audience members. Obliterating the lines between hardcore,
noise and free jazz, the unclassifiable Harry Pussy were at once all of these things
and none of them.
Originally released on Siltbreeze, their self-titled album reveals an antagonistic and
visceral approach to music: Hoyos’ self-taught, wild-style drums and shrouded screams
tangling with Orcutt’s high-tension blues guitar. As David Keenan writes in the liner
notes, “Harry Pussy played at such a heightened speed-of-thought climactic future
- primitive peak that they outstripped technique so completely that people thought they
couldn’t actually play at all.”

Liquid Liquid emerged from New York City's vibrant Downtown scene in 1981. Formed by
drummer Scott Hartley, bassist Richard McGuire, vocalist Sal Principato, and marimba
player Dennis Young, the group cut their teeth in underground clubs and street art
circles before solidifying their trailblazing style--a fusion of irresistible basslines
junkyard percussion, and urgent, free-flowing lyrics. Their three EPs, all originally
released on legendary 99 Records, would heavily influence dance-oriented indie rock of
the early aughts (LCD Soundsystem, DFA Records, et al.). Their eponymous debut
establishes Liquid Liquid's uncompromising vision, from its startling black-and-white
sleeve design to the minimalist grooves found within. While Principato's striking pitch
-shifted shouts on 'Bell Head' lead hypnotic circular rhythms, 'Rubbermiro' brings in
dub-inflected melodica and Richard Edson (Sonic Youth, Konk) on trumpet, closing
appropriately in a locked-groove.

B Reaching an End
(Note : 7" , 1000 copies on transl.-orange vinyl)
Recorded in Auckland in 1984, these archival tracks capture seminal New Zealand
band This Kind Of Punishment’s unique alchemy of poignant melody and four-track
claustrophobia. The previously unreleased “Radio Silence” offers an astringent,
phantasmagoric comment on—and perhaps retreat from—the contemporaneous NZ scene.
“Reaching An End” (from legendary compilation Killing Capitalism With Kindness) is
a classic in the mold later perfected on Peter Jefferies’ solo output: unadorned
piano blanketed by rich, wistful vocals, plucked strings and muffled drum beat.
Less, after all, can be so much more. Cover photography by Chris Knox.

What collection of the great works of Steve Reich would be complete without the mighty
Drumming? The piece, scored for a percussion ensemble of marimbas, glockenspiels, tuned
bongos etc., moves beautifully through an array of rhythms and counter-rhythms,
following Reich’s simple-but-complex patterns. This classic 1987 recording has been
remastered for this vinyl reissue on Pure Pleasure.

Crutchfield (keyboards) and Ikue Mori (drums). This first-time vinyl reissue comes with

New York's DNA have had a massive effect on alternative / indie rock around the world,
despite the trio never releasing a full-length studio album during their four year
tenure (1978-82). Various groups citing them as an influence have included Sonic Youth,
Boredoms, Big Black and Blonde Redhead (the latter taking their name from DNA's most
-famous song). While the band's explosive live performances captivated audiences,
extant recordings captured DNA's dynamic sound and savage economy in songwriting.
Originally released in 1981, A Taste Of DNA remains a primary source for No Wave
archaeologists. Singer/guitarist Arto Lindsay and drummer Ikue Mori are joined by
bassist and Pere Ubu founding-member Tim Wright. Across the EP's six anti-epic tracks,
the band charges forward with jagged guitars and dislocated grooves, while Lindsay's
guttural screams create a thoroughly personal semantics.
As Marc Masters writes in the liner notes, "A Taste Of DNA has a kind of sum-of-parts
insanity, wherein every musical element sounds conventionally off, like puzzle pieces
purposefully jammed together at the wrong ends."
This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of The Contortions' Buy and Red
Crayola's The Parable Of Arable Land.

in unique hand-stamped sleeves.
Ultra-rare first album from early electronics experimenter John Bender. Originally
released in 1980, Bender’s primitive punk electronics fed into electro-punk, no-wave
and synth-pop. This release is a mixture of bonkers tape experiments, proto-electro
and harsh DIY pop songs.

John Bender’s earliest output essentially forms a metaphorical bridge between the
original templates of minimalist, industrial and punk music from Terry Riley, T.G.
and Suicide in a way that was previously unimagined in 1979-81, or, at least executed
with such acute, idiosyncratic vision by anyone else.
Originally issued on the artist’s own Record Sluts label, the first 1981 pressing of
Plaster Falling was notoriously housed in sleeves that were hand-dipped in plaster
and hermetically sealed in latex, meaning that lucky owners had to break open the box
to get at the record inside.
Legit reissue of a minimal wave cornerstone. Pressed on transparent blue wax, housed
in deluxe reverse-board jacket with insert of liner notes by the artist. Includes
locked grooves.

Following the release of lo-fi electronic masterpiece I Don't Remember Now / I Don't
Want To Talk About It and his brilliant follow-up Plaster Falling, Cincinnati-based
artist John Bender began assembling his third and last album, Pop Surgery, in late
1982. While all of Bender's work draws from intimate home recordings - featuring the
artist alone with various keyboards, analogue sequencers and tape delays - Pop Surgery
remains the one that perhaps best distills his arrant deconstruction of the "pop"
concept. These twelve frenetic tracks, meticulously stitched together with dubbed-out
vocals and disjointed drum machines, stretch the boundaries of bedroom electronics.
Bender would forgo the handmade LP sleeves typical of his Record Sluts imprint. The
cover depicts an imposing scrapyard crane, ready to pick up discarded objects with
its bright red electromagnet, while the center labels dtourn Columbia's classic '70s
style. "I pressed a single run of 500 copies," Bender recounts. "The only review I
remember railed at the poor production quality. The DIY era had clearly come to an
end." This first-time standalone reissue is recommended for fans of Suicide, TG's
20 Jazz Funk Greats and early Cabaret Voltaire. Liner notes by John Bender.

"Suicide's landmark self-titled LP was originally released in 1977, seven years after
the group's initial conception as part of the performance art scene on the Lower East
Side. It is hard to overstate the importance of the seven tracks on Suicide, which
paved the way for punk, industrial, hip hop, noise and beyond. "Ghost Rider"
accelerates with brutal anguish and desire for everything rock 'n' roll. Martin Rev's
utterly singular "instrument" pounds out a synthetic soundscape, while Alan Vega's
oversaturated vocals obsess over motorcycle getaways. "Rocket U.S.A." distills the
duo's dynamic power down to a ghostly pulse, while the psycho-drama of "Frankie
Teardrop" (Bruce Springsteen's all-time favorite song) delves even further into
cinematic storytelling and, at the same time, clears the room at the end of the night.
Superior Viaduct is honored to present Suicide - restored from the original mixes,
fully sanctioned by the band and with liner notes by Thurston Moore. If there can
be a quintessential New York band, it is without a doubt Suicide."

"Scottish singer-songwriter Bert Jansch recorded his first album in producer Bill
Leader's London flat with a borrowed guitar, sitting on the edge of the bed and singing
into a portable tape recorder. As author Richie Unterberger writes in the liner notes,
'When Bert Jansch's self-titled debut LP was issued in April 1965, he was already a
major figure on the British folk scene. His synthesis of traditional British folk with
blues and a bit of jazz was at the vanguard of a new generation of UK folk performers,
well-versed in past forms but unafraid to venture into new territory. His virtuosic
guitar was complemented by a plaintive rough-hewn voice that didn't just document the
on-the-road experience, but lived it.' Bert Jansch contains all original material,
except a shattered cover of Davy Graham's 'Angie' that Jansch makes all his own.
'Needle of Death,' one of the first folk songs to address the consequences of heroin
use, yields to a restraint uncommon for Jansch, yet beautifully encapsulates the
album's tone of heartfelt conviction. Superior Viaduct is honored to present the
first-time domestic release of Bert Jansch's debut, remastered from the original
master tapes. For those interested in a unique strand of music that would become a
major influence on everyone from Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Donovan, Neil Young and more
- there is no better place to start than here."

The Fall returned to Rough Trade in 1983 to release a pair of singles ('The Man Whose
Head Expanded' and 'Kicker Conspiracy') and Perverted By Language, their sixth proper
studio album. Perverted By Language hints at the band's shift towards a distinctly pop
approach, one that they would perfect via their Beggars Banquet output that immediately
followed. Yet again, the force and panic of their initial Rough Trade recordings
remains the foundation for much of the album. A transitional recording in the absolute
best sense, Perverted By Language is The Fall both as they were and as they would
become. The emergence of Brix Smith is often cited as the impetus for The Fall's move
toward outward pop, and she first makes her first appearance with the band on Perverted
By Language. Nowhere is her presence felt more than on 'Hotel Blöedel,' where she
handles lead vocal duties alongside Mark E. Smith whose mangled violin accompaniment
roots the song's cold romanticism in his unmistakable brand of strange. 'Garden'
provides a new take on The Fall's stretched-out tendencies -- using ringing, clean
guitars to build a nearly 10-minute epic more subtly than ever before. The opener,
'Eat Y'self Fitter,' is wholly classic Fall: a playfully circular bass line drives
the album's strongest vocal spout, complete with emphatic breaks where Mark E. Smith
issues the song's spiteful decree with equal parts glee and scorn. Superior Viaduct's
edition is the first time that Perverted By Language has been available on vinyl
domestically.

In the fertile terrain of New Zealand's 1980s post-punk scene, few figures loom as
large as the Jefferies brothers. Graeme Jefferies and Peter Jefferies - the primary
forces behind This Kind of Punishment - wrote some of the best music to come out on
Flying Nun, Xpressway or elsewhere. A dizzying mix of pastoral ballads and DIY
experimentation, TKP's songwriting was at once classic and acutely raw. On their
self-titled debut, the Jefferies brothers and Chris Matthews eschew the punk-informed
modes of their contemporaries for a sound that is decidedly more deliberate/intimate.
Rooted in a marriage between simplistic, classically-influenced piano, alternating
guitar chime and sparse, subtle violin drone, This Kind Of Punishment is a
contemplative, inventive collection of ideas corralled via economic 4-track recordings,
minimal instrumentation and an austere performance style entirely of the Jefferies'
own making. Songs like "After The Fact," "In View Of The Circumstances" and "Two
Minutes Drowning" boast a living quality whereby the listener can act as bystander
to these moments of creation - a trait that the band would expand upon throughout
the course of their brief tenure. First-time vinyl reissue since its initial release
in 1983.

New Zealand's finest gloom brothers, the Jefferies, worked their way around post-punk
swirl in a variety of bands and had the pleasure of releasing it for classic labels
like Xpressway and the esteemed Flying Nun. Their best project was This Kind of
Punishment, where their more experimental inclinations came to life; A Beard of Bees
was a record of strange movements tethered by their dirgy melodic inclinations.
Originally self-released in 1984, A Beard Of Bees has been out of print for almost
25 years.

Early days DIY electronic music from 1981! Kevin Harrison released his one and only LP

sensibility make these songs suitably somewhat weird. Grand. First time reissue, on

'Totally Wired'/'Putta Block', 'The Man Whose Head Expanded'/'Ludd Gang' and
'Kicker Conspiracy', none of which appeared on any of the band's studio LPs.
With 7-inches being the era's vehicle for buzzing communiqués, The Fall would
use the format for short-form, standalone works rather than as mere promotional
devices for forthcoming albums.

critic wrote of the group, 'Those who couldn't play tried to learn and those who could
tried to forget.' Their debut EP first appeared on Fast Product in 1978, featuring the
collective's original six-piece lineup and delivering three startlingly original songs
-- 'Never Been In A Riot,' '32 Weeks' and 'Heart And Soul' -- that never appeared on
any of their albums. Like fellow Leeds misfits Gang of Four and Delta 5, The Mekons
form a rowdy and illuminating piece of the UK post-punk puzzle, fusing everyday
political concerns with a no-holds-barred approach to performance. This first-time

critic wrote of the group, 'Those who couldn't play tried to learn and those who could
tried to forget.' The Mekons' second 7-inch stands as a lasting monument to the punk
era. 'Where Were You,' an anthem with chiming guitars, military-style drums and snotty
lyrics, may be one of the most epic songs written with just two chords. The angular
spasms and up-front bass thump of 'I'll Have To Dance Then (On My Own)' would become
tenets for many of the post-punk bands that followed. Fast Product's slogan upon the
single's initial 1978 release: 'The Mekons' new awareness of sound.' A double A-side,
indeed. This first-time vinyl reissue and first-time domestic release comes with the
original sleeve design. Limited edition translucent yellow vinyl."

Spacemen 3 began assembling their third album, 1988’s Playing With Fire, at perhaps
the freest, most confident point in their career. Recording began with the band road
-tested and rugged, even amidst the functional volatility that famously motivated
their course. The sessions’ first offering came in the form of “Revolution,” a single
of heroic Stooges-devotion and the most commercially successful release the group had
to date. High expectations for the album were soon exceeded, as Playing With Fire
would become Spacemen 3’s crowning studio achievement and cement their rightful place
on the vanguard of otherworldly rock ‘n’ roll. An exquisite mix of stuttering tremolo
guitars and wistful melodies, Playing With Fire sheds any trappings of revisionism and
furnishes a nuanced grade of psychedelia. Epic entries like “Suicide” (named after the
notorious NYC band) and the mesmeric “How Does It Feel?” catch Spacemen 3 at their
celestial apex, the very point where their collective writing, performance and
production would crest and wondrously splinter.

1990’s Recurring, the fourth and final studio album by Spacemen 3, is often considered
the introduction of two brilliant solo projects (Spectrum and Spiritualized) rather
than the work of a functioning band. While Spacemen 3’s departing statement surely
reveals a deep divide within the S3 camp—each side of the LP was written by Sonic Boom
and Jason Pierce separately and, unlike previous releases, the two do not play on each
other’s songs—Recurring maintains a cohesive, dreamy feel with its chief sonic officers
backed by fellow travelers Will Carruthers, Mark Refoy and Jon Mattock. Opening saga
“Big City (Everybody I Know Can Be Found Here)” marries ambient haze with narcotized
indie rock, while “I Love You” manages to arrange a beautiful flute alongside a
defiantly throbbing bass track. “Hypnotized,” a reimagined fuzz-pop hymn, would become
the group’s first entry in the UK Singles Charts. Recurring lays bare the essence of
Spacemen 3’s persistent sound, rooted in both aural expansion and phenomenal
songwriting.

Housed in a gatefold sleeve with download code; includes the "legendary Northampton
demos from 1986". "Amidst the swirl that is Spacemen 3's discography, Taking Drugs To
Make Music To Take Drugs To occupies a pivotal position -- one right at the nexus
between their garage beginnings and their expansionist future. While much of this
material is expanded upon via Sound Of Confusion and The Perfect Prescription, many
devotees consider these urgent, minimally treated recordings as the prime document of
Spacemen 3 at this stage. Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To casts Spacemen 3
alongside the mid-80s cadre of UK front-line rockers, contributing a distinct variation
of high pop shining through layered noisy guitars. Ultimately, this collection serves
to exalt the strength of Spacemen 3's songwriting over the atmospherics and production
assemblage that would permeate their later efforts. Be it the rave-up rendering of
'The Sound Of Confusion' or the churning take on 'Losing Touch With My Mind', these
full band recordings capture the excited and inspirational spark of psychedelia rather
than deep-dive ruminations on sonics and space.

B3 Walkin' With Jesus 4:00
In 1984, Spacemen 3 made their first-ever recording session and sold a few cassettes
at now-legendary, incendiary gigs. Growing out of the dual guitar attack of Jason
Pierce and Pete Kember, the band's three-piece line up with Natty Brooker on drums
offered a liturgical take on '60s psychedelia, bare-knuckle blues and stunning
feedback. This early glimpse into the Spacemen 3 cosmos -- crafted by and for all
the fucked-up children of this world -- captures the band's unorthodox approach to
rock 'n' roll with nuance and power. While the raw atavism of 'Things'll Never Be
The Same' and 'Walkin' With Jesus' would be scaled back considerably on later
recordings, the one-chord propulsion of 'T.V. Catastrophe' and hardwired stomping
of 'Fixing To Die' draw from a primitive force that served as the impetus for the
group's formation. For All The Fucked-Up Children remains the perfect introduction
to Spacemen 3. Not only do these demos reveal the auspicious beginnings of two
teenagers born on the same day in Rugby, England, but also compelling clues that point
toward the exploration and eventual refining of their signature sound.

SV 157 PHILL NIBLOCK : Niblock For Celli / Celli Plays Niblock LP 09.2018
1. Second Two Octaves And A Fifth 20:50
2. First Performance 15:27
Composer, filmmaker and photographer Phill Niblock is a true pillar of the New York
avant-garde. In the past 50 years, he has curated over 1,000 performances at his Centre
Street loft and steadfastly built a massive, multidisciplinary body of work. While his
earliest musical compositions date back to 1968, Niblock waited until the early ’80s
to release any recordings. Nothin To Look At Just A Record, a powerful debut with
densely layered trombones, would be the first to unfurl his unique approach to sound.
The second album and perhaps the most rare in Niblock’s vast catalogue, 1984’s Niblock
For Celli / Celli Plays Niblock is a meeting of two great minds. Working with reed
player Joseph Celli (a composer in his own right, who has collaborated with John Cage,
Pauline Oliveros and Ornette Coleman), Niblock nimbly removes the breathing pauses
from Celli’s oboe and English horn to create seamless, enchanting drones. Niblock
insists that his music be played loud: only in this way can one experience the visceral
ringing of these long instrumental tones through the speakers and their natural
overtones generated by the room. Niblock For Celli remains deeply absorbing.

With This Kind Of Punishment, Graeme Jefferies and Peter Jefferies produced some
of most adept DIY sounds to emerge from New Zealands 1980s post-punk scene. After
their phenomenal self-titled debut and classic A Beard Of Bees, the brothers would
make one last album together, In The Same Room. Originally released in 1987 on
Flying Nun, In The Same Room is perhaps the straightest rock offering in TKPs
esteemed catalogue. Opening track "Immigration Song" expertly pairs jagged guitars
with wrathful vocals-resulting in one of the most celebrated moments in their
recording career-while "Dont Go" puts the full breadth of the Jefferies brothers
method on display: spiraling riffs, somber baritone and chamber-like calm give way
to frenzied rhythms and antagonistic lyrics. From deeply insular songwriting to
hands-on production, This Kind Of Punishment draw the listener in close-nearly within
the same room as the players-and remain rooted in a distinct approach to presentation
that is inseparable from their music.

SV 191 PRIMA MATERIA LA CODA DELLA TIGRE LP 04.2022
01. LA CODA DELLA TIGRE PART 1 (22:19)
02. LA CODA DELLA TIGRE PART 2 (24:05)
"Prima Materia was a vocal improvisation ensemble, founded by Roberto Laneri in 1973.
Composed entirely of vocalists with no academic training, the group developed various
techniques -- revolving mostly around the use of overtones -- that would embody their
unique sound. No instruments nor electronic manipulations were ever employed within
the group's physiognomy, which was realized purely through the human voice. La Coda
Della Tigre, the group's sole album, was recorded in 1977 by Alvin Curran and released
on Ananda, an artist-run label founded by Laneri, Curran and Giacinto Scelsi.
As the original liner notes state, 'The music of Prima Materia may sound radically
new, yet at the same time it is likely to ring some distant bell and evoke ancient
emotions. This is not due to chance: indeed, the very name of the group points to
a specific path, namely, the unfolding of the potential implicit in the alchemical
symbol as embodying a process of transmutation of consciousness.' Prima Materia's
four members (Laneri, Claudio Ricciardi, Gianni Nebbiosi and Susanne Hendricks)
combine voices to create a singular, beautiful drone that is (as the group's name
suggests) both impossible to define and fundamentally simple. This first-time
standalone reissue is recommended for fans of La Monte Young, Terry Riley and
Disques Ocora."
