REM 1 CASSIE CHANGE MY IMAGE 7" 05.2020

        A Change My Image
        B Will You

Formed on the Isle of Wight in 1978 the four-piece of Nigel Hayles - guitar, Debbie
Barker - lead vocals, Eric Biggs - bass and Hugh Kim Lewis on drums was originally
known as Flirt before changing their name to Cassie in 1979; likely as a nod to
Blondie whose songs the group favored along with the likes of The Pretender, Ramones
and Eddie & The Hot Rods. Despite recording demos for Wilf Pine, the former mobbed-up
co-manager for Black Sabbath, major label deals were not forthcoming. Thus Cassie
issued their only single of two Barker penned, Pine-produced tracks, 'Change My
Image,' backed-with 'Will You' on A.K.A. Records in 1982. Whether or not the name
of the label used for the release - A.K.A. - was any reference to Pine's numerous
underworld connections is unclear. What is clear, however, is the strength of the
two Barker originals. 'Change My Image' is a bratty bubblegum-punk paean to future
sell-out success ("Gonna kick off my jeans and start smoking fancy cigarettes!")
while the furious guitar riffing on 'Will You' fortunately for today's listeners
finds Cassie about three years out of step with the prevailing New Pop styles of
1982. Instantly obscure upon issue, Cassie's only record became instantly hard to
find. The band would continue to perform releasing only one other track on a regional
compilation before finally breaking up in 1985.

REM 2 CHERYL KILLER KISS 7" 05.2020

The hit of the summer of '81 that never was, is NOW! It's Cheryl with her lone single
'Killer Kiss' - an unfairly forgotten soundtrack to an endless hot-girl-summer.
Whilst the charts of 40 years gone were clogged by the likes of Toyah, Shakin Stevens,
and Kim Carnes, Cheryl's update to the girl group sound of the 1960s outpaces 'em all,
squeezing and pleasing with pouty-shouty vocals and warnings (danger: heartbreak dead
ahead) all done up and updated in a trashy/punk-y throwaway power pop style by Cheryl
- aka then-eighteen-year-old London-born Cheryl Powling - bored - bounced from school,
modeling and dead-end jobs until she caught the eye of former Animals manager and
Barn Records boss Chas Chandler. Recorded at Stage One Studio in London and released
in January 1981 on Penthouse Records (perhaps in a nod to another one of Cheryl's past
employers), 'Killer Kiss' is an absolute heartbreaker's declaration of intent.
As the ear-worm chorus so proudly states: Killer kiss! One kiss'll kill ya! Killer
kiss! Red hot lips! Got the kiss of the killer kiss! It's a fever, fever, fever!
Buffeted about with an almost QUICK-like nursery-rhyme guitar keyboard run, 'Killer
Kiss' sound should have carried Cheryl out from Page 3 to the top of the charts, but
the single sadly did not make it above the fold. With no future musical prospects,
Cheryl packed it in. Cheryl now breeds chickens and works as a professional stained
glass artist and mother of three.

REM 3 THE SOUND PHYSICAL WORLD 7" 05.2020

"Can you hear the sound?" Adrian Borland intones urgently on 'Physical World', the
title song from The Sound's very first record, a 7" EP that has been out of print
for 40 years and now fetches hundreds of dollars on the collectors' market. Lovingly
reissued by Reminder Records, 'Physical World' captures Adrian Borland and his newly
named group at a transitional point musically. Whereas Adrian's previous group
The Outsiders were informed by The Stooges (James Williamson's guitar playing
especially) and the Sex Pistols, The Sound were heavily influenced by Joy Division,
a band Adrian had seen live numerous times and been captivated by. The Sex Pistols'
anger was aimed outwards; Joy Division's was introverted and turned in on itself.
On the enemy within.

        A I WANNA BE A STAR
        B AT THE SEASIDE

Holy grail UK powerpop/DIY single, originally released in 1979. Both sides are
uptempo, brilliantly written songs with a rough and spontaneous quality to the
