        09. JOHANNESBURG

One of the great figures in the history of soul and funk music captured live in
Germany in 1983. This is a double LP set of Gill Scott Heron and his eight piece
band. Amnesia Express was a fine collective with reeds, trumpet, bass, percussion,
drums and Gil Scott-Heron himself on Fender Rhodes piano and vocals. The album opens
with a breathtaking solo performance of "We Almost Lost Detroit" and includes, among
others, another masterpiece, "Winter in America". No words, just deep soulful and
politically conscious music at its best.

Frank Zappa at one of the very peaks of his genius! The 1975 version of the Mothers
of Invention was an extremely tight combo featuring Napoleon Murphy Brock (saxophones),
Roy Estrada (bass, vocals), Andre Lewis (keyboards), and the young and already fabulous
Terry Bozzio on drums The band was in superb form as was Zappa himself on guitar and
vocals. The chosen repertoire was a great mix of both old songs such as "Duke of
Prunes" and new material, including a very rare performance of "Sleep Dirt". A must
for all Zappa fans!

A rousing high-energy show with great radio broadcast sound quality from Joe's first
American Tour in 1979, in support of his debut album "Look Sharp!", where he also
previews a few songs from his 2nd album, I'm the Man ('Friday', 'Kinda Kute',
'I'm the Man'), which would be released later that year, as well as some interesting
covers (The Maytal's 'Pressure Drop', Chuck Berry's 'Come On'). In this show it's easy
to see how and why he made such a vivid impression on the late-70's music scene with
his mixture of punk, rock, pop, and classic styles.
