Down At Dawn present a reissue of Jimmy Smith's The Sermon!, originally released in
1959. Recorded in 1959, The Sermon! appeared as another proof that Jimmy Smith was the
most inventive organist of the bop generation. This was the product of a marathon jam
session including highly energetic hard bop renditions of Charlie Parker tunes like
"Confirmation" and "Au Privave" and a mind-blowing line-up featuring jazz masters of
the time such as Lee Morgan (trumpet), Lou Donaldson (alto sax), Art Blakey (drums),
Tina Brooks (tenor sax), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Kenny Burrell (guitar), and George

Down At Dawn present a reissue of Ken McIntyre Looking Ahead with Eric Dolphy, orig.
released in 1960. Ken McIntyre was a one-of-a-kind multi-instrumentalist and music
educator and Looking Ahead was his debut album as leader featuring the great Eric
Dolphy. The album appears as one of those extremely intriguing and yet lesser known
works in jazz history. The whole group with pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Sam
Jones, and the great drummer Art Taylor, swings hard and clear underneath the McIntyre
-Dolphy unprecedented horn section. A very interesting date based on a variety of
McIntyre originals and a personal rendition of a Gershwin classic, "They All Laughed".

Down At Dawn present a reissue of Dinah Jams, a live release from Dinah Washington
originally released in 1955. Recorded live in studio in Los Angeles in 1954, this set
shows Dinah Washington leading an all-star band that included Clifford Brown/Max Roach
Quintet members Harold Land (tenor sax) Richie Powell (piano), and George Morrow
(bass), as well as trumpeters Maynard Ferguson and Clark Terry, alto saxophonist Herb
Geller and pianist Junior Mance. Dinah Washington is in top form with her powerful
blues-inflected voice covering a set of all-time favorites like "Lover Come Back to
Me," "You Go to My Head," and "I'll Remember April". These pieces also represent
musically the perfect spark for brilliant solos from each member of the group.

Down At Dawn present a reissue of In Milan, a rare studio date from Chet Baker's first
trip to Europe. In Milan captures the king of West Coast jazz in Milan with a band
specially assembled for these sessions that features some of the best Italian musicians
of the time. The basic quartet includes Chet Baker (trumpet) Renato Sellani (piano)
Franco Cerri (bass), and Gene Victory (drums). However, that unit is often upgraded
to a sextet with Glauco Masetti (alto sax) and Gianno Basso (tenor sax). The cool
spirit of Baker's music lives through some inspired fluid performances of American bop
classics such as Miles Davis's "Tune Up" and Charlie Parker's "Cheryl Blues".

Down At Dawn present a reissue of Tadd Dameron's Mating Call with John Coltrane, orig.
released in 1957. A fine session run by the great pianist and composer Tadd Dameron
recorded in 1956 featuring the young lion John Coltrane who was fresh off playing with
Miles Davis. A solid and frequently overlooked gem consisting of six strong and
beautiful Dameron compositions, performed by a tight quartet completed by John Simmons
on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The Dameron bass-heavy piano style gives solid
bottom and plenty of space for Coltrane's highly articulated phrasing. A special treat

Green's discography, originally released in 1961. Recorded in 1961, Grantstand is
Green's third album for the legendary Blue Note label. An excellent soulful and groovy
session features Green leading a line-up consisting of Yusef Lateef (tenor saxophone,
flute), Brother Jack McDuff (organ), Al Harewood (drums), and Ben Tucker (bass).
Green's guitar tone matches perfectly with McDuff's organ sound and Lateef's warm

acoustic quartet with Frank Strozier (alto sax, flute), Ronnie Mathews (piano), and
Larry Ridley (bass). An unpredictable hard bop-post bop transition album bearing
different colors and moods. From Charlie Parker's primary influence through some sort
of Coltranish expanded sound. Without forgetting to mention a both unexpected and
